As the Premier League nears its thrilling conclusion, the race for European football is heating up — with Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League spots up for grabs. But this season brings an extra twist: new qualification rules, cup winners, and European performances could shift the balance and expand England’s representation in UEFA competitions.
Here’s your ultimate guide to how Premier League teams can qualify for Europe in the 2024-25 season — including every possible scenario and how up to 10 teams could make it.
At the start of each season, the allocation typically looks like this:
Champions League: 1st–4th
Europa League: 5th + FA Cup winner
Conference League: Carabao Cup winner
Due to strong performances in UEFA competitions, the Premier League has secured an extra Champions League spot via the European Performance Spots (EPS) system.
Champions League: 1st–5th
Europa League: 6th + FA Cup winner
Conference League: Carabao Cup winner (Newcastle)
Newcastle United, having won the Carabao Cup, are guaranteed a Conference League spot — unless they qualify for the UCL or UEL via league position.
If Newcastle finish top 6:
→ Conference League spot passes to 7th
If they finish top 5:
→ Conference League drops to 6th, if needed
Manchester City (4th)
Aston Villa (6th)
Nottingham Forest (5th)
Crystal Palace (12th)
→ Europa League place goes to 7th
→ Conference League could go to 8th, depending on Newcastle’s finish
→ They take the Europa League spot directly
If Arsenal finish top 5:
→ No change (extra spot moves to UEFA playoff round)
If Arsenal finish outside top 5:
→ They take an extra UCL spot → 6 English teams in UCL
Both currently outside top 10
If either wins:
→ They qualify for UCL → Premier League could send 6 teams to UCL
If Chelsea finish outside top 6:
→ They take a Europa League spot
This could push Conference League to 9th or even 10th if other conditions align
For a maximum of 10 clubs in Europe:
Arsenal win UCL
Man United or Tottenham win UEL
Chelsea win UCoL
All three finish outside top 6
UCL: 1st–5th + Arsenal + UEL winner
UEL: 6th + FA Cup winner + Chelsea
UCoL: Newcastle (or passed down)
If Chelsea win the Conference League and finish 8th:
They play Europa League
EPS gives 5th UCL → shifts UEL to 7th, UCoL to 9th
If Chelsea and UEL winner (Man United or Spurs) finish 8th & 9th:
10th gets Conference League spot
Minimum European teams: 8
Maximum realistic: 10
Theoretical maximum: 11, but highly unlikely
Premier League fans, buckle up. The final weeks are going to be wild — and Europe’s waiting.
